H.S.B. Middle School
The
H.S.B. Middle School is comprised of Secondary Cycle 1, Years 1 and 2
-- a school within a school designed to meet the needs and characteristics
of a very diverse and varied school population.
Students have a limited number of teachers, allowing teachers and students
to really get to know each other.
The cross-curricular subjects, which are part of the M.E.L.S. reform,
ensure that learning is connected to every day life.
The H.S.B. Middle School has created an environment where students have
a place to feel comfortable, thus aiding in their success.

Our
Programs
International Baccalaureate Program
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program focuses on respect
for cultures, religions, racial and intellectual diversity to foster
a better understanding of others and concerns for international issues.
It promotes a holistic perspective to learning and stresses the importance
of communication which in turn develops language skills.
Option Études
Program
The Option Études Program is aimed at encouraging success
by allowing our children to live their passion for sports through
their learning over an innovative and stimulating period. Students
learn the cultural, social and environmental aspects of each activity
in a structured bilingual environment.
The Learning Center
Composed
of a small number of students who are assisted in their daily
academic and social school programs with the aid of a teacher,
an education assistant and a behaviour technician, Learning Center
students are integrated into the regular classrooms during homeroom
and selected subject periods. The small class size and the inclusive
model of integration provides the students with an excellent
opportunity for intensive teaching and guidance.
Directions Alternative School
Using alternative methods of instruction, community-based learning,
high structure and behaviour modification, Directions attempts
to aid learners who, for a myriad of reasons, have lost touch
with their own educational path. By redirecting their at-risk
behaviours and helping them to face the obstacles in the way
of their learning, the atlernative school program increases their
likelihood of success. Directions has a comprehensive procedure
for entry into the program which includes recommendations from
teachers and administrators and interviews with perspective students
and their families.
Bilingual Program
The Bilingual Program is designed for the majority of students
who have successfully completed the bilingual program in the
elementary sector. The Bilingual Program includes French as a
Second language course, as well as other subjects taught in French.
Trades
The semi-skilled program is designed for those students who need
support to make the transition from High School to the world
of work. This one year program offers general studies in English,
Math and French but focuses on preparation for the world of work
with a significant part of the year on work stage. This program
does not lead to a High School diploma.
D.A.R.E. Differentiated Approach Related to Education
This is a course of study for students who are experiencing serious
academic delays (2 or more years) where the curriculum is adapted
to meet the individual needs of students. Students who succeed
in this program may follow the regular course of study in Cycle
2, Year 1 as outlined by the M.E.L.S. Some students may require
3 years to achieve the academic level to be in the regular program.
